The 2^nd Annual Pugsley World Championships Fat Bike/Mountain Bike Race was held in Decorah on Saturday, February 25, 2012. “Fat Bikes” are among the newest innovations in mountain biking. With “freakishly large” tires more reminiscent of what one might find on a motorcycle, fat bikes are cycling’s answer to the all-terrain vehicle. With wider rims, fatter tires, lower air pressure, and more ground contact, the bikes offer superior traction and some “floatation” allowing the bikes to navigate much more easily in snow, mud, sand and loose hardscrabble conditions than a conventional mountain bike. Surly Bikes’ “Pugsley” is probably the most recognized model as it is a Twin Cities’ brand and has been around the longest, but there are other manufacturers making “fat bikes.” The list includes Milwaukee’s Schlick Cycles’ “Northpaw” (which is custom-built in West Branch, Iowa, by well-known frame builder and mountain biking pioneer, Tom Teesdale); and Salsa’s” Mukluk,” also a Twin Cities brand. Other manufacturers have models with names like “Fatback,“ “Crawler,” and “9:Zero:7,” and Surly’s latest creation called “Moonlander,” an even bigger and fatter variation on their popular Pugsley. Decorah’s Pugsley World Championships are a celebration of the fat bike phenomenon, and while the event is open to anyone on a bike, only those riding a fat bike are eligible to win the race and the over $1,500 in cash and prizes offered to the top race finishers.

Race Director Jesse Reyerson from Plattevliie, Wisconsin (formerly of Decorah), has a humorous take on the event, “If Vikings rode bikes, they would have ridden Pugsleys,” he says. “Even though it is a competitive field with a large purse at stake, we try to make it fun, and at the end of the day everyone felt good about the course, the race, and their competition. There is camaraderie among mountain bikers, and today there were stories of a few racers who got lost on the course and other competitors who helped them back on track to the finish. A couple of the cash winners even split their purse winnings with those who helped them to the end.”

With more than 30 participants in this year’s event, the race field had riders from five states, and from as far away as Omaha, Neb., to the west, and Chicago to the east. The pre-race meeting was held at Cooper’s Pub at The Oaks at 10:15 a.m. with a race start at the base of an abandoned section of “Old Highway 52” on what will become the final paved section of the Trout Run Trail later this year.

It was a bumpy start. At the top of the first climb of the 22-mile course where the abandoned highway turns into “trail under construction,” the frozen ruts and uneven terrain created by heavy equipment tracks made for some bone-jarring bicycle racing. The course wound back into Decorah past the Eagle’s nest and the Trout Hatchery along the TRT, with most of the paved trail still snow-covered from the week’s earlier snowfall and some of the higher sections still clogged with older drifted snow.

The racers crossed Twin Bridges and took on the challenging singletrack trails in Palisades and Van Peenen Parks. “Some of the trail sections were a little dicey,” said one rider, “you really had to pay attention and stay off the smooth ice in the turns. “ As the day wore on, some south-facing trail sections became muddy and difficult to ride, even with the fat tires. Chad Wilson from Milwaukee commented, “under the conditions, I did not think they could possibly top last year’s race course from Cresco to Decorah… but they did it. It was awesome!”

The lead pack of a half dozen racers was established early on the first climb, and the group stayed together until mid-race when they hit the snow and ice-covered singletrack in Palisades and Van Peenen. The eventual winner, Maciej Nowak, age 34, from Waukesha, Wis., emerged from the woods just ahead of second place finisher, Trevor Olson, 38, from Rochester, Minnesota, and Tim Norrie, 37, from Minneapolis. Nowack, Olson and Norrie were awarded $500, $250, and $150 respectively. The top local finisher was Marc Folkedahl in fourth place, followed by Ben Shockey in fifth, Jeff Freidhof in eighth, Taylor Mansfield in ninth, Justin Ratzlaff in tenth, Ward Budweg in eleventh, Benji Nichols in twefth, and Kirk Johnson in seventeenth. The top female finishers, Kate Heil, 34, from Waukesha, Wis., and Laurie Stensland, 36, from Madison, WIs., took home $100 and $50 respectively.

Sponsors for the event included Cooper’s Pub, Surly Bikes, New Belgium Brewing Co., Fat-Bike.com, Bar Mitts, Doug and Diane Osborn, Jeff Freidhof, Eric Clement, Decorah Human Powered Trails and Decorah Parks and Rec. The event generated $650 for trail maintenance in Decorah’s parks.

Where's the White?!?! PWC - It's On!

As you may or may not have noticed, the ground is awfully colorful for this time of year. Have no fear, the PWC will not be cancelled. Christmas wasn't white this year either, and I still got lumps of coal.

We have come up with a series of 5 different race course depending on conditions. The route will be anywhere from 19 miles to 36 miles. Yes, that is a bit of a difference. You can count on a mix of paved trail, gravel roads, single track, and Odin willing, some snow shoe or snow mobile trails.

The Pugsley World Championships was never intended to be a snow bike race. It's intention is a Fat-Bike event. Fat bikes are becoming more and more popular as riders are evolving to handle these ass-kicking bikes all year round. So plan on having a little fun on Saturday, get a little muddy, and maybe win some money, some beverages, some bar mitts or a maybe even a gigantic battle ax with Large Marge blades. The prize pot is 2 and 1/2 times bigger than last year so you're chances of winning some cash is 250% more likely, or something like that.

Treasurer’s report.

We have approximately $700 in the checkbook at Park and Rec, plus another $280 in Petty Cash.

Outstanding bills: We owe Lee Hackman $50 for candy purchased for the parade last summer.

La Crosse, Wis., Human Powered Trails

Deke Gosen and Kirk Johnson gave a brief update on the La Crosse Wisconsin Human Powered Trails issue, as they had attended a public hearing in La Crosse a week ago to in support of the La Crosse trails group. In a nutshell: The city council there had briefly considered the possibility of selling off the land (for housing development) where the La Crosse HPTrails are located. Public interest in keeping this land undeveloped and adopting the land into the official park system prevailed. The La Crosse organization did a very fine job of positively educating and informing the public and presented petitions with a few thousand signatures supporting the park designation. Deke and Kirk both spoke at the public hearing along with a dozen other local supporters. The park designation (saving the trails!) passed unanimously at the next full council meeting following the public hearing.

Website/Blog Responsibilities

There was a long discussion about the Website (cost: $13.75/month; Jesse Reyerson has been paying this fee out of his own pocket since the site was founded). Jesse suggested we look at a GoDaddy.com site? Another suggestion was to perhaps get rid of the site and associated costs altogether and simply use the Blog (which is free) There were a number of ideas put forth. The blog is the place where most of the updated information is posted. The website is static, or at least has been the same for a long time. It was suggested by a number of people that the Blog needs more entries on a more regular basis. Jesse could set up more author access for the DHPT group so that there is more frequent updates and interesting things going onto the Blog.

It was determined to ask Jesse Reyerson to look into the Web issues and make a recommendation to the group at the next meeting as to the most sensible way to transition the management of the Website and Blog.

2012 DHPT Tasks

Sponsorships/Fundraising

Justin Gullekson, John Wilmes and Troy Whitehill have volunteered to take over the Sponsorship Fundraising Drive for the year. Jeff O’Gara will meet with the group and provide them with the information and materials they need to raise the funds from renewing sponsors.

Trail Maintenance

Jim Tripp has expressed interest in maintaining the trail maintenance position. There are a few others who are also interested in the paid position. It was determined to keep Jim Tripp in the position due to good performance of those duties last year. It was suggested that the group help Jim a little more with some of the larger projects following Winter and Summer/Fall wind storms when trails become blocked with fallen trees and branches.

Decorah Time Trials

Deke volunteered to continue as race director for the Annual Time Trials.

Night Shift Night Race

Deke suggested that we need more help with the 2012 night race. There was also a suggestion to move the date up a month in order to capitalize on warmer Fall weather and the likelihood of better trail conditions. Dates for Platteville’s Blockhouse Roll were taken into consideration… and it is likely that event will be moved into the summer months. It was decided by the group to move the Night Shift night race up to TWO WEEKS Following the Chequamegon Fat Tire 40, for the foreseeable future.

Iowa Bike Summit

Iowa Bike Summit in Des Moines is Jan. 27-29

Benji Nichols and Ward and Jacki Budweg will attend and represent DHPT

Winn. Co. Tourism will provide the booth and two hotel rooms for the event.

Gasoline costs will be reimbursed.

Jesse Reyerson will provide a Trail Map and Events Schedule (printed) for the reps to hand out to participants.

It was noted that the maps at ExploreDecorah.com get 200 hits per week.

There was some discussion about what to display at the Summit: Bring a screen display of Mountain biking footage…. Paired with the IPTV show “Iowa’s Simple Pleasures” that featured Decorah’s trails last year.

Pugsley World Championships

The Second Annual Pugsley World Championships (PWC II!) will be held Saturday, February, 25, 2012.

There was some discussion about the closure of last year’s course to Snowmobiles (and horses) through the DNR’s public lands near Cardinal Marsh, making it impossible to run the race from Howard County near Cresco, through Ridgeway to Decorah. An alternative route (Loop starting and finishing at the same place is being considered for 2012. The alternatives include getting permission to use parts of the Trout Run Trail and using our Decorah Human Powered Trails as well. There was lots of discussion about trail conditions… snow… no snow… warm weather/mud gravel roads etc… There was concern that as a World Championship event, that the course needed to be Great! It was decided to allow the race director to consult with others and determine the course a week ahead of time (When weather and the extended forecast can give us an indication of the best possible route to create), and announce the course officially at Frostbike (Quality Bike Parts annual product show in the Twin Cities) Feb. 17-19^th, 2012.

This Morning I asked Kirk and Deke how it went. This is what they had to say.

From Kirk:

Very well...There were at least 100 people in the room in support of the measure to make the area an official "park." The crowd ran the gammut (local hikers, University student CC runners, local homeowners) It was standing room only.

You had to fill out a short form expressing your view on the issue when you "checked in" at the door... and indicate if you were requesting to speak.

Deke and I were 2 of about a dozen speakers.

They gave everyone 3 minutes. Deke probably used a minute... I probably used 2.

2 other speakers were local real estate developers who basically said that developing this last would not be appropriate due to the costs involved.... and the city has just spent over $1-million buying up some bluff top land to keep it from being developed... so why would you develop this?

Another speaker was an 8-year old girl who said "she liked to play here and have fun." (She is the daughter of an old Luther grad friend of mine, Rusty Koch)

A couple of local bike guys, a shop owner and a Human-Powered Trails father/son team (They were at the Night Shift Race this fall)

The speakers were very respectful and succinct.

The group of councilmen/women voted unanimously to place this up for a vote on Thursday night when they meet next. Several of the voting members spoke positively about supporting the measure on Thursday, and thanked the public for their huge show of support for the measure. I am sure the measure will pass.... probably unanimously.

Afterwards, People thanked Deke and I for showing up to support the measure from "out-of-town." and a couple of the council members recognized in their comments that people had come from out of state to defend the issue.

From Deke:

Last night was a an example of a well run grass roots campaign. The
broad base of support included every one from real estate developers
to 8 year old kids. There was 100 or so people there of all ages, and
about a dozen of us spoke, myself and Kirk included.

I had heard that the councilman who forced the issue was the bad guy
in all of this. He spoke at the conclusion of the meeting and
explained his position very clearly. The city had acquired this land
50 years ago from the state university system, with the intent of
making it into a park. After acquisition, nothing else was done to it.
It was never said what it was. A park? Industry? Housing?(Sounds like
FDR or Van Peenen!)
Then the city sold the National Weather Service land to put up the
weather radar ball that is in the tract. A precedent of selling of
fthe park was established...or was it?

The current process is clarifying the relationship of the Hixon tract
to the city of La Crosse, and after these hearings the council voted
unanimously to recommend park status. The final decision will be made
in a session closed to the public on Thursday. At this time it looks
like we will be able to ride up there for the foreseeable future.

Make sure you congratulate the La Crosse boys for a job well done.

DHPT - Next Steps

Hello All,

I'd like to thank everyone who has been a member/contributor/supporter and friend of Decorah Human Powered trails while I've been the President of the Organization. As some of you already know and some may not, I've accepted a position with the University of Wisconsin Platteville and I am now a resident of Wisconsin. Unfortunately, I don't foresee myself being able to fulfill my duties as president of the DHPT organization living this far away. It would be taxing on me, and difficult to do the job that the organization deserves. 2011 was one of the busiest years for DHPT to date, with many purchases, fund raising drives and events, parade floats, a paid trail position, and community service work just to name a few successful activities.

As I have to step back from this organization, I have been reflecting on why we started DHPT in the first place. The #1 goal in founding DHPT was simple: To preserve the right for Decorah's local bicyclist to enjoy the Decorah Park systems. We've grown and we've managed to squeeze a lot more than that into our list of accomplishments, but I would ask everyone to keep in mind that the #1 priority going forward should remain keeping the Decorah Parks and Trail Systems open to local Bicyclists, Runners, Hikers and Walkers.

Deke has laid out a well worded e-mail with the direction DHPT needs to take. There has been a lot of work done a small number of people in the organization for some time. We need your help and participation to keep it going and to keep our trails open.

The January DHPT meeting will be held on Tuesday January 17th at the
Oaks. Please note the change of date.

You are receiving this e mail because you have expressed interest in
participating in in DHPT activities and projects.
Well, this meeting will give you the chance to make a difference. On
January 17th, we will be discussing and setting the schedule for the
up coming year.
Items on the agenda will include, and will not necessarily limited to
the following topics.

1. Election of officers. For a variety of reasons, none of the current
officers will be running for office. If you you have an interest in
contributing to the future direction of DHPT, feel free to run for one
of the officers.

2. Signing up for projects and events for the upcoming year. For the
last couple of years, every thing has been done by the same few
people. Consequently, things seem to have fallen into a rut. We are
looking for fresh ideas from any body who has them. If no one wants to
take a project on it would follow that they project is not worth
doing.

We will need leaders for the following projects:

1. Sponsor ship drive. This will include letters to prospective
sponsors, following up on the responses, collecting logos, sending out
thank you letters, updating the kiosk sponsor sheet and sending out
sponsor appreciation plaques. This would work best with 2 people to
spread out the work. The time frame for this job will be getting out
letters in April, updating the kiosks in June and getting letters and
plaques out in the fall.

2. Race and event promotions. This position will be the point person
for the Time Trials, Dirt Burger and Night Race. This will include
determining courses, working with Park and Rec, and organizing
volunteers.

3. A paid trail position which will run from April to September. This
will be the third year we have had this position. Last year Jim Tripp
put in about 100 hours of work. Compensation is $2000.00 for the whole
season.

4. Volunteers to run a Tuesday night club event. This could be any
thing from time trials to enduros to orienteering to whatever you
think would be fun. Bring your ideas and be creative. Any thing goes,
and it is not limited to our trail system. Think about Yellow River,
La Crosse or Rochester.

5. Contributors to the blog and web site. The blog and web site get a
lot of traffic. Let people know what you have to say.

We will be providing a sign up sheet for the above jobs.

La Crosse Human Powered Trails need our help

The La Crosse City Council is considering whether to designate a city owned tract of land on the bluffs above the city, Upper Hixon Forest, as a park or to use the land for housing developments. This petition is to encourage them to designate as a city park. This will protect the land and the shared use trails that have been built there by HPT volunteers. These trails already provide a greater positive economic impact for the community than any housing development would likely provide. Please send a message to them in support of the park designation before January 10, 2012. This petition will be delivered to the mayor and every city councilor.

There has been some comments in the past about the conflict of the Pugsley World Championships and CIRREM taking place on the same date. It is unfortunate, I've heard great things about CIRREM and I wish we could have made something else work, but we couldn't. I'm sorry, you're just gonna have to choose to race your 3.7 + inch tire bike or your 1 - inch tire bike. Regardless, you have a couple of options to have on fun on February 25.

Hey All

This Saturday (Dec. 10) we will hold the December meeting as one big happy family above Oneota River Cycles.

Pot-Luck Style. Feel free to bring food - I'll be impressed if we end up with something other than equally large piles of High Life and Doritos, but it will be a pot luck none the less.

And for you fat bike loving freaks (such as myself) - FROSTCHESTER - is the first of an annual event that we will be holding here in Rochester. All you need is a fat bike or someone who has one and how to have a good time outside in the ice and snow.

It will be more of an end of the 2011 season gathering - with a few business items to talk about. I haven't been to town in about a month, but the snow is on the ground in Minnesota. If you were thinking about taking up snowboarding this winter - keep in mind - bikes are faster. Any bets on if Doug could take this guy on skis?

Last Enduro of the Season

This Tuesday November 29th looks to be a great evening and it just happens that it is going to be the last enduro of the season. This enduro will be special, as it will be held at our new venue, which has been labeled the Pugsley Pit, by Spinner.

The new venue is located near the bottom of Public Television as you work your way up the first climb, on the plateau to your left, only a few hundred yards from the beginning of the trail.

It will be a cool evening, but it is the end of November and there is no snow, so lets celebrate.

Last Time Trial of the Year

It is getting to that point of the year where soon our attention will be turned to things other than riding the trails.

So lets get together one last time, for the last time trial of the season. The weather looks to be pretty nice.

I'm not sure exactly what it is called anymore, but once a year a bunch a drinkers with a bicycle problem ride around in a dog park in the Minneapolis area. Someone tried explaining to me all the different little names and cities and towns, but I didn't really get it. I just said "I'm from Iowa" even though I'm kind of not anymore. I've had a history of breaking bikes at bike events lately, and this was no exception. Big Dummy repairs are in progress. A video of the crowd reaction to said bike busting (and the Surly warranty/replacement program) will be posted as soon as I figure out how to do so. In the mean time, here are some pics.

Once we go through the accomplishments of 2011, I'd like to talk about the Vision and Direction of DHPT. We've been a pretty casual group for a long time and we've been open to just about everyone's opinion. I think we should revisit what exactly it is we are trying to do with this organization. Lately I've heard a lot of differing opinions about what this group is actually supposed to do.

We should go back and look at what we set out to accomplish when we started DHPT, and look at what we've achieved and what we've missed. Once we talk about those points, we should figure out where we go now and start planning for 2012.

It was a great night to chase people around it the woods on your bicycle.

And as it turns out, it was also a great night to enjoy a

barley flavored beverage under a bridge down by the river.

And it was also a great night to ride bikes through fire,

although we found out that xtracycle bags are not great at being fire proof.

nearly half the field hailed from Wisconsin.

Oh well, great awards venue none the less.

Some people believe fires exist to keep people warm.

Meeting was called to order by Jesse at 7:00 pm Tuesday September 6 at the Oaks.

1. Treasurers Report

2. Tools A motion was made by Jeff to purchase another leaf blower and a smaller chain saw. Seconded by Jesse, and approved by voice vote.

3. Trail rebuild and maintenance projects. (Listed in no particular order)
A. The River Trail. There are a couple spots on the River Trail that are getting too close to the river, and need to be moved up hill.

B. The Dirty Harry move on Dust Bowl. It is breaking apart, and should be stabilized.
C. Old Randy's. Old Randy's is getting used more and more, and if we are planning on using it in the future, we will have to replace several erosion control structures.

D. Public TV. Public TV is the newest trail in our system, and after we have rode it a few times, we realize we make some modifications. There is also a large amount of trash. to be picked up.

4. Night Race. This year the Night Shift will be held on Saturday October 22. Final course to be determined. We discussed soliciting donations from local businesses for prizes.

5. Sponsor Appreciation. We discussed plaques. Jesse volunteered to
come up with some ideas in time for the next meeting.

6. Trailer use policy. The consensus of all attending is that at this
time, the trailer will only be used for tools and work days - no
personal uses.

7. Trail work day. We scheduled a trail work day for Sunday September 25 at 10 am Meet at Oneota River Cycles.. We will be focusing on finishing off Public Television. I am guessing 3 or 4 hours of work.

Meeting adjourned by Jesse. Next meeting will be Tuesday, October 4 at 7 pm at the Oaks. Please send me any items for the agenda by September 30.

Lately it has been a trend of mine to start a job in the Springtime that is located some place that is not Decorah. Trust me, it hurts me just as much as it hurts you. Well, maybe not quite as bad as it hurts you if you're a bar owner, or a bike repair man, or in the medical field, but it hurts all the same and deserves some kind of recognition. Last year, people who don't even live in Decorah came to say goodbye, good riddance, and get the hell out. Last year was an epic series of 2 mile bike rides to Bluffton. This year, let's get wetter.

Let's Kayak to Bluffton

We'll leave Decorah sometime around 1:00 so those of you who plan to be responsible can get things done while those of us who aren't responsible can rid our hang overs. We'll drive north of Bluffton and kayak float, paddle and party, eventually getting back out in Bluffton.

We'll have chicken fries, cheese burgers, deep fired broccoli, and heck maybe a shot or twelve at Randy's.

I will work on getting a trailer to haul all the boats up at once.

I will also supply around 52-58 cans of Campaign depending on what time we leave.

TNR: Tuesday Night Ride

There has been a discussion through out most of the summer about a good night for Decorah Folks to com up and see what the Rochester Paved Trail scene is all about. Given the fact that no single date is good for everyone, we're just going to have to make it this coming Tuesday night. I would start it out with a party at my place, but then we party too much and there is little riding done, and even less is remembered.

For example: Last TNR at 5:30 p.m. looked like this.

This was my place Wednesday Morning.

Let me know if you're interested, and we'll find places for you to stay. Driving after a TNR is not recommended, if it's even possible.

The pre-ride starts at Brother's Bar around 6:00 p.m. Here we talk about our day, enjoy barley pops, and wait for the group to trickle in until 8:00 p.m. From here, it's on. Bar hopping, bridge stops, maybe a derby or two, typical bike shenanigans. A Great Time will be had by all. Bring a light and let me know if you're interested.

And if you can't make this, you should try to make this: It's a birthday ride for the hairiest guy you know. Bill as in the new long Surly Trailer. I don't know if Ted is making an appearance. We might have to haul an incapacitated Wookie home on Bill.

There will be a prize for any Decorah folks who can pull off appearances at both events.

I don't know about you, but I'm still recovering from the Nordic Festivities. No Meeting tonight.

The trailer looked good in the parade. Thanks to Freidhof, Eric and Emme Clement, High School, and a whole bunch of future Team Folkedahlers for riding along, and Thanks to Captain and his trusty Jeep for driving.

The trailer will be parked in the 48 hour lot. Talk to O'Gara if you need to get in there.

Nordic Mess Gathering at the O'Gara Homestead

This weekend is Nordic Fest, so we need an outlet to get away from the lutefisk and polka dancing. I will be having a Gathering at my place this Saturday.

Festivities will include, a mountain bike ride leaving at 2 p.m. from my driveway. Upon return, roughly 4 p.m. we will have the Lawn Game Olympics, consisting of bags, croquet, and those balls with string you throw at pvc pipes.

For dinner I will be grilling out the ever famous "Barnyard Pimp", also known as chicken. I will have some beverages, but it is always a good gesture to bring some to contribute.

I'd like to take a moment to toot our own horn and say you're welcome for the miles and miles of awesomely built and maintained single track, biking, running, hiking, walking trails. DHPT has consisted of Volunteers since 2002-2003. Hard working individuals have donated their afternoons, Saturdays and Sundays to give those who appreciate outdoor activities to get a work out in the woods, or just relax in the valley, or get to places in the park they would not normally be able to access. Over the years we've accumulated some expenses with tools, fuel costs and hosting events. To quote nobody, "It ain't easy taking care of 20 miles of trail in 3 park systems".

Last year we began asking businesses who appreciate what we've been able to do if they would be interested in helping our cause. We appreciate that they appreciate DHPT and the work we do. July 2011 Meeting Minutes

The July 2011 Meeting Minutes

We did purchase an enclosed trailer and it has all of the DHPT tools and equipment in it. It is currently parked at the O'Gara residence. We are working with Kelly Printing and Graphics in Preston to get it "wrapped" with our DHPT Logo and the logos from our sponsors. We are hoping to have it done in time to enter it into the Nordic Fest parade. Captain will pull the trailer with his Jeep, unless it is raining and then we'll explore other options. We may either throw candy, or have bicycles with trailers handing out freezie pops.

The Phelps trail extension onto the Trout Run Trail is not going to be a project at this time, but when Park and Rec is ready to do something with the trail, we will be ready and happy to help.

The Secretary Treasurer position will be filled by none other than Richard "Deke" Gosen for the remainder of the 2011 season.

We discussed the possibility of forming a DHPT Non Profit organization. This would mean that DHPT would no longer be a division of Park and Rec, but a seperate entity that works with Decorah park and Rec to maintain the Park Trail System. It was decided not to go forward with creating a non profit at this time.

In other news, Kailyn O'Gara is really fast.

July DHPT Meeting July 12 - Glory Hole

The July DHPT meeting will be held at the Glory Hole on Lower Mother's Day trail following the Monthly Sprint Time Trial Tuesday July 12.

If the Time Trial is rained out, plan to meet at T-Bock's at 7:00.

There are a few items to talk about

We did purchase a new enclosed trailer and we're working to get logos and sponsors on it by Nordic Fest. I will see if we can have the trailer parked down by the Ice Cave Road entrance to the trail before the meeting.

If we can get the logos and sponsorships completed by Nordic Fest, do we want to display it in the Nordic Fest Parade?

TOW or the Trout Run Trail Committee has asked if we would be interested in building a trail to restore the Phelps hiking trail at the top of the Cut.

Trevor Rockwell has resigned from the Secretary/Treasurer position. Jeff O'Gara has been acting Secretary Treasurer since Trevor's Resignation. We will talk about possible replacements.

Discuss creating a Non Profit Organization for DHPT as a stand alone entity that works in collaboration with Decorah Park and Rec, as opposed to a division under Decorah Park and Rec.

Sorry to break it to you that we won't be gathering to talk business tonight after the long holiday weekend. But I think we're going to be OK here, there are no events in July. The Pugsley World Championships, Decorah Time Trials, and the Dirt Burger are all in the books for 2011. The Night Shift happens in October, so we've got some time. Jim Tripp is doing a good job raising a new born and clearing trails. We did purchase a new trailer with the money raised from our sponsors, and I am waiting to hear back on the pricing to get the sponsors logos listed all over the thing. Hopefully I will have that information back by next week's meeting. Until then, hit the trail.

Tuesday June 28th, Time Trial Enduro Style

Howdy Y'All,

This coming Tuesday will be the Second Monthly Time Trial Enduro.

The idea is to have teams of riders who will each do a lap and rotate riding for an hour and a half, or 2. The winning team will have the most laps at the end of the allotted time frame.

BRING A BIKE LIGHT............................

Riding begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Van Peenen Fire Pit.
It will be the same social grill and beverages as usual, just with a little different twist to the riding portion. O'Gara will have brats and chips, bring your own beverage.

Teams will be determined by drawing names out of a hat.

This will be the first ever time trial enduro. The enduro format will consist of 2-4 man teams, where each member must do at least one lap of the designated course. The teams will be picked before the start of the race. The team with the most laps in the set amount of time wins.

It is pouring buckets now, but tomorrow is supposed to be 83 degrees and partly sunny.

It is going to be a perfect evening for our Tuesday Time Trial.

Starting at 6:30 from the GLORY HOLE, leaving in 1 minute intervals. If you can't make it until later we will start you when ever you get there.

I will provide the brats and a few cans of beer, more beer is always appreciated.

I thought I would just add my version of the story. It's been a little known fact that I'm so fast on a mtn bike that I've driven the spectators to become hectators. While they may cheer you as you race by, they are bound and determined to bring me down. And this year they failed...

Here I am, JRA - enjoying the weather and a lovely day for a bike race.

Uh Oh! As I gingerly ride around a corner and into the valley, the Hectators decide that it would be a good day to tackle me.

I tried to ride right over them, but believe it or not, they were too tall.

First thing First, foot sweep the redneck Gus White and take him out of the equation.

Step 2: go after the bike thief.

Once you catch said bike thief, grab him by the throat, lift him over your head, and choke slam him straight to hell. That's where bike theives belong. Even good humored fun loving ones in broad daylight in the middle of a bike race. That'll Teach him.

Until next year, I'm sure.

There should be another picture here, but I think once everyone witnessed the impact, some sort of ethical responsibility and whispers of profanity took over and they stopped taking pictures.

But don't worry.

No Dave Lunzes were harmed in the making of this blog post.

Due to rain the Time Trials Enduro for tonight is canceled. Sorry to disappoint. Feel free to get your gravel training miles in but please stay off the single track trails until they have some time to dry.

The may DHPT meeting will be held at McCaffery's on Tuesday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. They are usually closed on Tuesday nights but they invited us to come out and hold our meeting there. There will be a limited menu and of course, barley flavored beverages. Amongst other agenda items, we will be discussing the Decorah Time Trials, Dirt Burger Schedule, and a possible single track trail from the Twin Springs loop to McCaffery's.

Yes boys and girls, it is true, Spring is finally here. It is time to welcome her arrival in typical DHPT fashion. We will be having the first Time Trial of the season on Tuesday April 12th, 6:30 at the Glory Hole.

Come one, come all, but don't come unless you want to have a good time.

Ah Yes, Temps are up and Trees are down. The snow is gone but there's mud all around. I decided I didn't really feel like riding yesterday, being a Monday and all; but I really didn't feel like running either. I wanted to work out, and already hit the gym in the a.m., so I figured I'd go get a different kind of trail work out.

Don't get me wrong, I think chainsaws are cute and all, but sometime I just like getting dirty and working with my hands. I'm not saying that I'm cooler than Chainsaw Jeff O'Gara (not that I'd need to say it anyway) but once in a while I get an urge to pay homage to my Berserker Viking ancestry and destroy downed trees and branches with a good ol' ax and hand saw. Just so happens I broke my ax (that's a story for another time), and I left the Pugsley World Championship Trophy at home, so I relied on my trusty bow saw to do some trail clearing.

A Chain saw is a great tool and necessary at times (like after the flood of 2008), but they are also heavy, cumbersome, non human powered, and kind of scary (I'll get some $h*! for admitting that last one). Fact is, a lot of the downed trees and stuff can be cleaned up with simpler tools, a little bit of time, and some good old fashioned elbow grease. As soon as I figure out how to saw with my left hand just as good as my right, we'll really be in business.

Lower Mother's Day and Upper Boa are done.

Trail work

Howdy everyone. Spring is sort of here and there are a bunch of trees that have fallen on the trails this past winter.

We need people to get out on the trails and pick up fallen sticks and cut out downed trees. If a few people could get out with chainsaws in the next week or two, the trails will be ready to ride when they dry up.

Yesterday I went out and did : The Luge, All Death valley, Rocky Road, Little Big Horn, Dust Bowl, North 40, Gunnar, Julia, Freds and lower Randys.

Email me what trails you are going to do or have done and I will post on the blog, so people don't walk all over the countryside replicating efforts.

Puglsey World Championships Recap

Racers-
Venue- Venue worked out great. Trail conditions were excellent, yet challenging with the new snow. Oaks provided great place for post race party.
Prizes- Thanks to Jeff Friedolf for the $500 to the winner of the race (Trevor) and also Jesse for the awesome axes as prizes that went to the top three in the race and the PWC Champ (Jeff Friedolf). King of the Hill went to Dave Lunz who took home a plunger!!

Headed to Vernon and rode the start of the Championship Trail and it is safe to say that the trail is covered in "HERO SNOW and ICE" if there is such a thing. Basically it is fast and icy! Watch your line as the ice pops up and can throw you down in an instant. With the snow possibility tomorrow it should be an awesome ride/race! Come have some fun and ride the beller trails and gravels from Cresco to Decorah and then enjoy some tall boys and fat tired shenanigans! See ya all at Vernon tomorrow for the 10:30 start!!!

More information about the course. It might be Snow. It might be Ice. It might be Mud. We didn't call this thing a Snow Race. We didn't call this thing an Ice Race. We didn't call this thing a Mud Race. Hell, we didn't even call it a Bike Race. It a Pugsley Event.

And a good thing it is a Pugsley Event. Because it might be muddy. It might be snowy. It might be Icy. If that doesn't sound fun, please stay home. Any whiners will be beaten with the trophy.

A little history of how this thing started. Me and a couple of buddies were riding around one lovely afternoon and decided to go off trail and check out a new area. 2 of us were riding Pugsleys, the other a regular single speed rigid. He was impressed with the capability of the Pugsleys. He asked "Why isn't there a Pugsley World Championship?" I said "I dunno." He said "Make that happen Reyerson." I said "Ok".

Race starts at 10:30. Registration will be day of. Registration place is to be determined.

The Course is 26.3 miles - give or take.

Night Shift Course Change

Due to the bridge which is out on Quarry Hill road, we have been forced to adjust the night race course. We will be starting on the west end of the River Trail, and ride the whole to its end, and then take the blacktop over rto the Luge, up Rocky Road, through the Van Peenen trails, down Fred, up new Randys' over to Rattlesnake cave, cross the road down to the River Trail, and then the River Trail back to where we started. The distance will be about the same (about 7.5 miles), and we won't have to do the gravel climb up Quarry Hill.

Sporty Pal GPS: Rode a casual but steady pace on the Pugsley.

This weekend we will have some visitors from the Linn Area Mountain Bike Association. I did some riding in my little stint in Cedar Rapids this summer, and believe it or not, I made some friends. There will be a series of night rides, day rides, and social gatherings this weekend. I will post more as the schedule becomes defined.

October Time Trial Tuesday 12th 6:30

It is time for our monthly time trial and it should be a gorgeous night. Meeting at the fire pit in Van Peenen, timing starts at 6:30 and will go until the last person wants to ride. It will be dark, so bring your lights.

I will bring brats and buns for the evening snack, everyone else bring your favorite beverage.

Well folks it is time to head over to Yellow River Forest this weekend and get our ride on! We will be leaving from in front of Oneota River Cycles at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday,Sept 19th for some sweet trails. Bring your bike, some refreshments and some food and lets go have some fun on some amazing trails in the forest by the Mississippi. Come have some fun!!!
